No good deed goes unpunished.

PICS: Candid Celeb Sightings

While on their way to a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kansas City on Friday night, three stars of ABC's hit sitcom Modern Family were trapped in a crowded elevator for almost an hour, ABC News reports.

Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson took pictures together during the ordeal, which Ferguson posted to his Twitter account.

"This is us right now. 45 minutes stuck in this elevator," Ferguson wrote, captioning the snapshot from the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel's third floor.

The actors were an hour late to the event after the Kansas City Fire Department rescued them, but they maintained a good sense of humor about their plight, reportedly joking about the ordeal on stage.

Ellen DeGeneres Pens Open Letter to Supreme Court to Pass Prop 8 for Gay Marriage

With a touch of her trademark humor, Ellen DeGeneres tackles a very serious topic close to the talk show host's heart: gay marriage.

In an open letter posted to her website, Ellen reaches out to members of the Supreme Court, who will soon decide the fate of same-sex couples who wish to wed.

Pics: 'Amazing Race' Stars Cheer Up Bullied Gay Fan

"Portia and I have been married for 4 years and they have been the happiest of my life," she blogs of her longtime partner Portia De Rossi. "And in those 4 years, I don't think we hurt anyone else's marriage. I asked all of my neighbors and they say they're fine."

Ellen, who tied the knot in 2008 during a brief period when gay marriage was legal in California, now urges the powers that be to open their heart and extend the privilege to every gay couple.

"I hope the Supreme Court will do the right thing, and let everyone enjoy the same rights," Ellen writes. "It's going to help keep families together. It's going to make kids feel better about who they are. And it is time."

Renny Harlin Talks Cliffhanger and Sylvester Stallone

Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin's first-ever U.S. film, the supernaturally charged Prison, is out this week for the first time on a special-edition Blu-ray, and while talking about the project and his career he revealed to ETonline that before he shot a frame of film on Cliffhanger, Sylvester Stallone told him, "I have a fear of heights."

Pics: 13 Must-See Movies for 2013

"When he first arrived in the Italian Alps and came to look at the location for the first time, he looked up at this 11,000-foot peak that was in front of us, and I said, 'That's where our set is.' And he's like, 'So who's going to go up there?' I said, 'You are.' He looks at me and he says, 'You gotta be kidding. I have a fear of heights. The highest I will ever go is the heels of my cowboy boots,'" says Harlin with a laugh. "And it became my task to trick him into wanting to be higher in the mountains, because he thought he would be done with trickery and stunt people."

The 53-year-old Finnish filmmaker continues, "I knew his psychology and I put him in a situation where it would have been embarrassing for him to, in front of the crew, refuse to get there. Obviously, I was able to get him there, and then once I got him to relax he was more than willing to do everything, and even more that I wanted him to do. The highest peak that we worked was 13,000 feet high, and there he was right on the edge, basically doing whatever it took."

So, how did Harlin coax Stallone into a helicopter in the first place to get airlifted to such lofty locations? "He was okay with a helicopter as long as the door was closed," quips Harlin.

The director of such late '80s and early '90s action staples as The Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea, Cutthroat Island and Driven got his first big break directing 1988's Prison, the story of an inmate population tormented by a mysterious and deadly supernatural force. He says of the shoestring-budget shoot at Wyoming State Penitentiary, "It was very crucial for me, because I had made one film in Finland before that, and this was now, finally after couple of years of really serious struggling in Hollywood, my chance to prove that I could actually make an American film."

Related: Arnold & Sly Nurse 'Expendables 2' Injuries

Harlin candidly adds, "It was a very scary experience, but I learned every day and I just tried to keep the ship on course and do my best every day. But I was petrified every morning I went to work. I was absolutely petrified. In the end, for the little money we had and the big things we wanted to do, we accomplished quite a bit and I was proud of the film. Did I ever imagine in my wildest dreams that it would have some kind of an impact, now that people claim that it has a little bit of a cult following and now that it's coming out as a special edition? I would have never imagined it."

Prison never saw a proper theatrical release due to the production company's bankruptcy issues, which Harlin considered "a huge blow to me," but he says "it taught me a hell of a lot about filmmaking in America" and it gave him a chance "to create another calling card … and ultimately was the reason that I was hired to direct A Nightmare on Elm Street 4."

After Harlin hit Nightmare out of the park and landed Die Hard 2: Die Harder, he quickly vaulted to A-list director status. But in Hollywood you're only as good as your last picture, and when the big-budget pirate epic Cutthroat Island (starring Harlin's former wife, Geena Davis) bombed at the box office in 1995, Harlin was knocked off his pedestal.

"Of course, that was a huge disappointment," he admits. "But I still had a chance to make some interesting movies after that, and visually they just give you another chance to prove yourself. … In Hollywood, you sort of have to be able to bend and reinvent yourself and seek different paths sometimes to kind of rebound and get back to the top of your game, and I went through such hard times and challenges originally when I broke into the business that anything after that is kind of easy to deal with."

The busy director explains that perseverance has allowed him to stay in the game: "You have to find and develop your process and find ways to get back in movies, and I’ve been lucky in that sense that I have had a chance to keep making movies, and I've done some interesting TV, and I'm developing my own series -- and now I have my brand-new deal to do Hercules."

Speaking on the disturbing trend, Pinsky acknowledged that McCready, like others who are or have been under his care, are deeply troubled and in need of continual treatment.

"I'm certain she's not the last [to lose their life to the disease]," Pinsky told ET's Rob Marciano on Monday, just one day after McCready passed away from a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound. The singer originally sought treatment from him for alcohol and prescription drug abuse.

He adds, "If somebody has a deadly disease that requires chronic treatment… [and] are not, everyday, involved in that treatment, their life is in danger today."

Pinsky also points out that it has been years since he has been tasked to care for the troubled star. In light of the recent tragedy, Pinsky condemns the inaction of those medical professionals responsible for treating the troubled star.

"What's awful to me is that she was allowed to go home where there was a firearm," he said.

McCready was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon after sheriff's deputies were called to her Arkansas home after gun shots were reported. Officers reportedly found Mindy McCready's body on the front porch of the home.

McCready had attempted suicide in the past, having been hospitalized in 2008 after she cut her wrists and took several pills. Her passing follows the shooting death of boyfriend David Wilson on January 13.

A public memorial will be held in Nashville in the coming days for Mindy McCready following the singer's apparent suicide on Sunday.

Jessica Chastain's Retro-Modern Style

ET caught up with Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain at the Calvin Klein Collection fashion show in New York City on Thursday, getting the Academy Award nominee to dish on her red carpet style and what she might be wearing to the Oscars.

PICS: Stars at New York Fashion Week

"I think my sense of style is all about embracing silhouettes from the past, especially feminine silhouettes, and making it modern," the actress said. "I love the actresses of the 1940s and '50s and '60s, and I think Calvin Klein does do that."

This style inspired the dress that Chastain wore to the Golden Globes, where she took home the statuette for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.

"[Women's Creative Director of Calvin Klein] Francisco [Costa] designed my Golden Globes dress and I really felt it was like Rita Hayworth -- the silhouette -- but he made it very modern and striking and interesting," said Chastain.

Olivia Wilde voiced a similar perspective, saying, "Francisco always comes up with something really modern and really cool while maintaining that chic simplicity ... It's not over-the-top and that's why it's always timeless."

As for what Chastain has in mind for the Oscar red carpet, she told us, "I'll probably wear color. I won't be the wallflower at the Oscars -- that's for sure."

Jerry Lewis Max Rose Set Visit

Hollywood legend Jerry Lewis explores the dignity of aging, the value of family, and the power of marriage in his new movie Max Rose. The octogenarian star exclusively shares a day on the set of the upcoming film with ET, and also gives our young interviewer Tatiana Toomer a hard time – just for the fun of it.

Pics: 13 Must-See Movies of 2013

Asked to explain his character in the film, he replies, "You want to hear about that? Buy at ticket." Tatiana then tries another approach and asks him to describe the scene they're shooting that day. He jokes, "Today is the day I operate on my own appendix."

The man with a self-proclaimed reputation "that says I'm not easy" was, however, quick to praise his Max Rose director Daniel Noah along with the hard-working crew. He was also happy to talk about his upcoming birthday.

"Eight-seven, baby! I'm going to have a bottle of Dom Perignon and I'm going to pour champagne for my daughter and my wife and me and my puppies," says Jerry about his upcoming March celebration. "Like New Year's, every year we go to bed about 20 minutes to 10. We look at one another and say, 'Well, after 35 years I'm still crazy nuts over you.' And we give one another a kiss and we go to bed."

Max Rose follows the story of an 82-year old jazz pianist and recent widower who revisits key moments in his life when a discovery, made days before his wife's death, causes him to believe his marriage was a lie. Claire Bloom, Kevin Pollak, Kerry Bishé, Mort Sahl, Lee Weaver, Rance Howard, Fred Willard and Dean Stockwell also star.

"It's got action, animation, truth, sensitivity, honesty, a wonderful cast of wonderful actors and a crew that's the best you ever saw in your life," says Jerry. "They are so nice and so good that I work my heart out so that I don't come up empty, because they deserve more."

Video: Meryl Streep 'Hope Springs' Bloopers

Prompted to reflect on his legacy, Jerry quipped, "My legacy? I don't believe in legacies. I believe that if you want to say something good about me, do it while I can I can hear it."

He then added, "I don't like to have to go back and remember what's gone. I'd rather go forward anticipating what's coming, and I know that this film, if I know anything about the work, we're going to shake up some people, because it has an emotional nub to it."
